Type of Accommodations

Accommodations have been categorized into several categories: Bed & Breakfast, Guest House, Hotel, Parador, Resort, Small Inn, Villa, Apartment/Condo and Rental. The following descriptions will help you understand choose which one best suits your needs.

    Bed & Breakfast
    A Bed and Breakfast (B&B) is traditionally a private home and the owner/manager lives in the home or on the property. Guests are accommodated in private bedrooms, a bathroom, separate from that used by the host, is provided for guests; and breakfast is prepared and presented by the resident host(s) and is included in the tariff.

    Guest House
    A Guest House is generally a private home which has been converted to accommodate guests. In Guest Houses the emphasis on the informal atmosphere and personal and individual attention to guests. Often meals are provided, although it is not a requirement. Facilities, showers and toilets may be shared.

    Hotel
    A Hotel is generally the largest of all accommodation types. Hotels usually include tennis courts, spa services, gyms, parking, swimming pool, restaurants, and on-site or nearby golf courses. In room facilities as standard (TV, tea & coffee making, etc.). More than eight rooms. Hotels are rated and categorized with one to five stars system.

    Parador
    A Parador or "Country Inn" must be approved by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and must meet certain criteria, subject to annual review. Among other requirements, Paradors must be located outside the San Juan metro area (most of them located on the west coast or in the mountains), must have 15 to 75 rooms, must have a restaurant on site or nearby, and must be family-owned and operated. The average room rate is from $55 to $250.

    Small Inn
    A Small Inn, like a Parador must be approved by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. Both our "Small Hotels of Puerto Rico" and "The Paradores of Puerto Rico" are marketing programs that feature small hotels in the island. The only difference is the location, the Paradores are generally located in the country - while Small Inns include hotels located throughout the island.

    Resort
    A Resort is similar to a hotel in that it offers a wide range of facilities and a large selection of activities. Units may be rented and available on time-share.

    Villa
    A villa is generally a detached private home, with multiple bedrooms, multiple bathrooms and other living spaces such as living rooms, dining areas, patios or verandas. Almost all private villas have their own private pool and full staff. The term is often used to refer to any vacation home. Villas usually rent weekly.

    Rental
    A Rental is a fully self contained accommodation, may be a studio, condo, unit, an apartment or a combination of bedrooms. Rental properties are not required to adhere to guidelines that relate to service, facilities, and hygiene, such as those used by AAA or Mobil, and is neither endorsed by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.
