You've all heard the famous adage: "Location, location, location!" The location of the hotel is critical too, it can determine the kind of experience you'll have. Hotels located within walking distance of key attractions - shopping areas, nightlife, public transportation - usually charge higher rates than those located elsewhere. Make sure the hotel resides where is says it is and that you get full and accurate information on the location. You don't want to get lost in a city you don't know well.

Other Factors to Consider

Read reviews from other consumers, it will give you a fair idea on what to expect, be sure to read a good number of them. And don't forget to post your review on the hotel after your vacation. Also, verify if the hotel is endorsed by or affiliated with recognized regional tourism organizations.

Think about the length of your stay and your activities. You don't want to spend a lot of money on your room if you're going to be away for a long part of the day. Instead, spend what you save on the room on dinner, activities and souvenirs.

The hotel star-rating system should give a good idea about the quality of the hotel. But since the system differs from one area to another, you should regard them as general guidelines.
